Students who have not passed Figure Drawing 1 must document corresponding experience or knowledge in figure drawing
The aim of this course is to train students in observational and drawing skills. This will provide them with tools and a basis for solving technical challenges in animation through the bachelor's program. The course is intended for students who have already learned the basic principles of figure drawing. Students will gain expanded knowledge of proportions, anatomy, movement and composition, and learn to work with more complex forms. Students will also learn how to detect proportions within a limited time frame, and they will, more generally, gain expanded knowledge of possibilities within drawing as an artistic expression. The main goal of the course is for students to further develop their skills in linear construction from Figure Drawing 1. The course consists of lectures and practical exercises with guidance.
In accordance with the national qualifications framework, the student will have the following learning outcomes after completing the course:
Students will have
- expanded knowledge of how to draw a human body in correct proportions
- expanded knowledge of movement, balance and composition
- expanded knowledge of the structure and muscles of the human body
- an understanding of how anatomy and movement affect the body's appearance
- expanded knowledge of linear construction
- expanded knowledge of how one can use drawing as a medium of expression and communication
Students will
- have deepend skills in drawing a living nude model
- be able to translate and interpret visual experiences in an expressive way
Students will
- have improved drawing skills and be able to see new possibilities in drawing
- be able to incorporate their knowledge of drawing into their animation work and further studies
The course is based on Figure Drawing 1, and emphasises linear drawing. The course is organized around a theoretical part and practical exercises where students draw a nude model. A teacher will guide the students in their individual exercises, suggesting drawing techniques that suit the individual etc.
Students will be given the task of explaining their own work to fellow students, practicing their analytical thinking and self-reflection. Students will also receive smaller homework assignments.
Lectures will be held in Norwegian and in English for foreign students.
At the end of the semester, the student selects 5 major drawing assignments that are submitted in a portfolio exam.

Grading will be done in accordance with the Regulations governing studies and examinations at Volda University College, § 5-11.
The course will be evaluated in accordance with Volda University College’s quality assurance system.
Students are responsible to provide the following basic equipment: charcoal, kneaded eraser and fixative. Additionally, they will need ink, watercolour, or some other desired medium. Other necessary equipment is provided by the school.
