Use of sources and citations

To write a good assignment, it is essential that you use sources correctly. Using other people’s material without properly citing it may be considered cheating or attempted cheating.

All students are required to adhere to the rules concerning the use of sources and citations. Legal aid and proper use of sources and citations are mentioned in Section 5-8 of the Regulations concerning admission, study and examination.

For exams without supervision

• your assignment should not contain content from other people’s written material or from other exam assignments at VUC
• your assignment should not contain contents from examinations at other institutions, domestically or abroad
• do not refer to or use other people’s material without properly citing it
• do not refer to or reuse your own written material without properly citing it

Cheating

Failure to properly cite sources or highlight quotes in any assignments that are handed in will be reported as cheating or attempted cheating.

Cheating can have serious consequences for students. The consequence of cheating or attempted cheating may be the annulment of examinations, exclusion from Volda University College, and loss of right to sit examinations at other universities and university colleges in Norway for up to one year. (cf. UH Law § 12-4).
 
The Division of Academic Affairs will be notified if suspected cheating or attempted cheating. The student(s) will be called for a meeting with the Division of Academic Affairs, who is responsible for the legal case process related to cheating.
 
At Volda University College, the Appeals Committee makes decisions in cases involving suspected cheating or attempted cheating. The committee determines the sanctions to be implemented in each case. cf. Regulations for admission, study and examination at Volda University College, § 5-10. Cheating and attempting cheating.

The Appeals Committee's decision may be appealed to a national appeals committee.
