Three courses are offered in the program: Arts and Understanding, Leaning In and Through the Arts, and Teaching Artist. The program qualifies the graduates for working as art educators or teaching artists in school and community programs.The teaching artist course includes a compulsory practice in cooperation with a school, a community or art institution.

Opptakskrav

120 ECTS in a relevant Art or Media discipline, and a sufficient mastery of the English language to participate in dialogue based lecturing.

Undervisningsmåtar og vurderingsordningar

The study program is only offered as a part-time study. The successions of courses are open to the student’s choice and dependent on when the courses are offered. The courses in the program are not offered each semester.

Teaching and assessment arrangements are made specifically for each coursework and usually concentrated in sessions each being 2-5 days.

Om studiet: 

The aim of the Arts in Education study program is to explore innovative practices to secure quality in arts education. With an interdisciplinary approach to arts practice the study focuses on the role of arts in education and the community. The role of arts in education is discussed from a variety of perspectives. A practical as well as theoretical approach will be explored to address the issues of philosophies on art, learning in and through the arts, and the role of the art educator or Teaching Artist. Related to the study’s interdisciplinary approach the AIE students will be expected to individuate their course of study according to a wide range of art forms, which includes visual art, creative writing, drama, dance, music, animation, film and media. The course work qualifies the graduates for working as art educators or teaching artists in school and community programs.

Læringsutbytte: 

In accordance with the National Qualifications Framework the student will achieve the following learning outcomes after completing the course:

 

Kunnskapar: 

The student has knowledge of a selection of chosen art philosophers of theories of what informs and improves quality in arts education, both within schools and in the community of key arts in education theories, practices and methods of central theory and methods related to their art discipline 

The student will aquire knowledge

  • of theories that informs and improves quality in arts education, both within schools and in the community     
  • of key theories, practises and methods that informs aesthetic learning processes and work of the teaching artist
Ferdigheiter: 

The student can use theoretical knowledge within arts in education to develop educational and community programs make use of relevant method and practices when working in a classroom or community setting work as a Teaching Artist and art educator, and be responsible for leading an art program be able to reflect on choices and evaluate practices performed by others

The student will attain skills in 

  • using theoretical knowledge and artistic methods to explore and support art making and learning in their art or media discipline     
  • how to work as a teaching artist and be responsible for planning, leading and evaluating a TA-program    
  • make use of relevant method and practices when working in a classroom or community setting

 

Generell kompetanse: 

The student has insights into how to prepare for and accomplish quality in arts education, is able to reflect on potential professional and ethical challenges and responsibilities and can discuss and communicate relevant proficient knowledge and issues related to arts in education

The student learn

  • to acknowledge the competence needed of a teaching artist[1]
  • how to build creative partnership involving an art institution and/or a community institution
  • how to create and perform a teaching artist program
