Thursday 11 September 2008, Volda University College, Berte Kanutte-huset, Main auditorium at 11.00 AM.
In order to understand the development and mindset of contemporary Japan, it is impossible to ignore the effects of the atomic bombs and the influence they have had on modern Japanese society. The effects can be seen in everything from diplomatic relations with other Asian countries to Japanese pop culture such as Anime, Manga and video games.
Miyoko Matsubara is one of the last remaining survivors of Hiroshima 6 August 1945, and she will be giving a lecture at the seminar. Students and others in the region will find her personal eye-witness account of the historic events on and after that fateful day both gripping and informative. On 8 – 9 September Ms. Matsubara will also be visiting pupils in local schools in Ørsta and Volda to talk about the atomic bombs and about ridding the world of the nuclear threat.
There will also be an exhibition of photographs from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
On the evening prior to the seminar, Wednesday 10 September, a concert in memory of the victims of Hiroshima will be held in Volda Church at 8.00 PM, where professional musicians from Japan will perform.
